Scheduling Senior Year!

Is Your Schedule Hurting Your Future??

Every year I meet with students and parents who ask about senior year course schedules. Although our teachers, counselors and administrators would agree that "easing up" during senior year would not necessarily be the right move for everyone, it is an option for many of our 12th grade students. Our culture commonly allows seniors to have some "off time" since they will be working so hard the upcoming years.  Most students have enough credits to take five classes (or less) and two off periods each semester (or more) senior year.
I would like to caution, as all of our school counselors often do, seniors (and those to come) to think twice before dropping down your schedule!
Unfortunately, too many off periods sends the wrong message to colleges.  These free periods are missed opportunities – times when students could be taking electives, additional advanced courses, or other academic offerings.  Students applying to colleges/universities would be better off trading that free period for another course.
Likewise, those looking to enter the workforce - the more well-rounded you are with your experiences and resume - the more attractive you are to future employers. Take the Customer Service Strategies to learn more about dealing with people. Take computer courses to sharpen your skills. Take the Financial Literacy to learn more about managing your money. Take courses that might apply to the area of work that you plan to pursue.
You do have the choice to have a lightened load senior year, but as with other important decisions, you should look at your options and seek outside opinions when planning for college.
And as I learned from some of our AMAZING SENIOR STUDENTS who helped on the RAM Panel today - YOLO! (You Only Live Once)!  Make the most of your time in high school!
